What is NEN 1010 and why does it matter?

NEN 1010 is the Dutch standard for electrical installations in buildings. It sets out what a safe, reliable and correct installation must meet, for both homes and business premises.

  • Insurance: in the event of damage the insurer asks for NEN 1010 proof
  • When selling a home: the buyer or valuer may ask for proof
  • When letting: the landlord is responsible for a safe installation
  • For business premises: health and safety rules and insurers require it
  • For a mortgage: sometimes requested by the lender

Questions about electrical installations

More in the knowledge base

What exactly is an electrical installation?

The complete electrical infrastructure in your building: consumer unit, cabling, sockets, lighting, switches, connections for appliances and special installations (EV charger, solar panels, smart home). Everything from the main supply to the last socket.

How long does renewing the installation take?

Small extension (socket, light point): a few hours. Consumer unit replacement: 1 day. Renovating a whole floor: 3 to 5 days. Complete new-build family home: 5 to 10 working days. Business premises vary. Always a clear schedule up front.

Do you work with a contractor or building company?

Yes, I work as part of building teams. I like to work from the building drawings and specifications and coordinate with other subcontractors. Self-builders are welcome too. I advise on what makes technical sense.

Do I need to replace my current wiring?

Not always. Modern PVC wiring (less than 30 years old) is usually still fine. I strongly recommend replacing older rubber or fabric insulated wiring. I check this during the site survey.

What if I want extra things during the work?

No problem. I discuss extra work beforehand, with the price. Nothing is done without your agreement. I document changes straight away.

Do you give a guarantee?

Yes, a 2-year guarantee on the installation. Plus the manufacturer's warranty on materials (varies by brand). Defects within the guarantee are repaired free of charge.

What if I can't be at home during the work?

No problem. I often work with a key and clear agreements. Before I start I take photos of the current situation, and during the work you get regular updates. The handover is always in person.

Do I get everything digitally or on paper?

Digitally in your customer portal: quote, schedule, photos during the work, handover file (NEN 1010 test report, certificate, materials specification), guarantee certificate and invoice. On paper too if you ask.
