What is the number plate of your electric car?

I check with the RDW (Dutch vehicle authority) which car it is and whether it charges on single-phase (up to 3.7 kW) or three-phase (up to 11 kW).

Why do I ask this?

The number plate tells me exactly whether your car charges on one or three phases. I choose the circuit and the cable based on that. I only use your number plate for this and I don't keep it.

Do you know at what power your car charges?

It's in the manual or on the manufacturer's website, under "AC charging".

How to tell, without opening anything

Your energy bill or your supplier's app shows your connection rating, for example 1x35 A or 3x25 A. The number before the x is the number of phases.
On your smart meter: use the button to scroll through the screens. If you see three voltages (L1, L2 and L3), you have three-phase.
Not sure? Then choose "I don't know". I will check it on the photo of your meter cupboard. You don't need to be certain of anything.

Why do I ask this?

On single-phase an EV charger charges at 3.7 kW at most. On three-phase it can be 11 kW.

How many amps is your main fuse?

Read it without opening anything: on the fuse below the meter or on your energy bill.

Where to read it, without opening anything

The main fuse below the meter shows a number with an A, for example 35 A or 3x25 A. Just look; the seal stays closed.
On your energy bill or in your supplier's app it is called "aansluitwaarde" or "capaciteit" (connection rating), for example 1x35 A or 3x25 A.
Can't find it anywhere? Then choose "I don't know". I will check it on the photo.

Why do I ask this?

The main fuse decides how much current your home may use in total. If the car charges while the oven is on, it all has to stay within that.

Does your smart meter have a P1 port?

A small socket for a phone-type plug (RJ12) on the bottom or front of the meter, often marked "P1".

Why do I ask this?

Through the P1 port the charger measures how much power your home uses, and charges more slowly when needed (load balancing). That way your main fuse holds.

Do you have a heat pump, or is one planned?

A hybrid heat pump counts too.

A heat pump and an EV charger together ask a lot of your connection. The charger then adjusts the charging (load balancing), so your main fuse holds.

A hob draws up to just over 7 kW. If you cook while the car is charging, the charger slows down for a while.

Why do I ask this?

I install Zaptec and Alfen. Both have the 6 mA DC protection in the charger, so an ordinary type A RCBO in the unit is enough.

The longer the cable, the thicker it needs to be. I work that out to NEN 1010, so the voltage at the charger doesn't drop too far.

Why do I ask this?

The route decides how the cable is laid, and so how thick it needs to be. Underground means digging.

How to tell

An empty space is an open gap in a row, or a blanking plate with nothing behind it.
The EV charger needs 2 to 4 of those spaces.

Why do I ask this?

The EV charger gets its own circuit with its own RCD protection. There needs to be room for that.
