What else determines the cost?
Every home and every business is different. Your situation may call for a tailored solution, for example extra circuits, a different brand range, changes to the main connection or a combination with an EV charger or solar panels. That's why you always get a tailored quote from me.
- Type of connection: single-phase or three-phase; three-phase often takes more materials and labour.
- Number of circuits: more circuits means more breakers and cabling.
- Access to the meter cupboard: a cramped or hard-to-reach cupboard can take more time.
- Extra work: adapting existing cabling, moving the unit or extra RCDs.
- Grid operator: sometimes the main connection needs changing; that goes through the grid operator and can mean separate costs.
Replace or extend?
Basic consumer unit replacement
Replacing an outdated fuse box with a modern consumer unit. Included: RCD(s), circuit breakers, labour and documentation. Suitable for a standard home with a single-phase connection, price on quotation.
Extending an existing consumer unit
Your unit is still fine, but you need extra circuits for an EV charger or inverter. I extend it with an extra RCD and breakers, often cheaper than a complete replacement.
Switching to three-phase
Needed for a more powerful EV charger, a heat pump or heavy equipment. I take care of the installation side; if the grid connection has to be upgraded, the grid operator invoices that separately.

Questions about consumer unit costs
What does a consumer unit replacement cost on average?
I use a package price for a complete three-phase meter cupboard (Hager), including among other things 12 circuits, 3 RCDs, a solar PV circuit, doorbell transformer and three-phase circuit, with installation and materials. You always get a quote. The amount is a guide price: on site it can turn out differently, for example in hours or cable, and I only do extra work after you agree.
What's included in the price for the complete meter cupboard?
Among other things 12 circuits, 3 RCDs, a solar PV circuit, doorbell transformer, three-phase circuit, main switch, materials and skilled installation to NEN 1010. I discuss non-standard situations beforehand.
When does a consumer unit need replacing?
With an outdated fuse box with screw-in fuses, when expanding for solar panels or an EV charger, in a new build or renovation, or when a NEN 3140 inspection recommends changes. I'm happy to assess your situation on site.
Is extending cheaper than replacing?
Often, yes: adding circuits, splitting a circuit or making room for an EV charger or solar panels. The price depends on the number of circuits, the condition of the unit and whether an RCD needs adding. Sometimes replacing is the wiser choice. I look at it on site and give a guide price up front.
What does switching to three-phase cost?
The cost consists of the work on the meter cupboard and the distribution board, plus, if the grid connection has to be upgraded, the grid operator's costs (they invoice separately). I take care of the installation side and coordinate the application to the grid operator with you.
Is a quote for a consumer unit free of obligation?
Yes. You get a transparent quote based on your situation. I only start the work after you agree. If more turns out to be needed on site, I discuss it with you first.

How many circuits do you need in your consumer unit?
Work it out room by room instead of guessing a number. And add four spare modules: that costs next to nothing now and saves a whole new consumer unit later.
