What does a meter cupboard extension cost?
Want extra circuits for an EV charger, solar panels or a renovation? On this page you'll find an indication of the cost and the factors that affect the price.
Often cheaper than replacingQuote possible from a photoGuide price up front2 years guarantee
What determines the cost?
Extending a meter cupboard is often cheaper than a complete replacement. You keep your existing unit and I add extra circuits or an RCD.
Whether an extension is possible depends on the space in your unit and the condition of the installation. Sometimes I still recommend a replacement, for safety and to be ready for the future.
Every situation is different. That's why I always give a tailored quote after assessing your meter cupboard or based on a photo.
Example scenarios
Extension with 1 or 2 circuits
For an extra circuit or a small renovation. Often one extra breaker and possibly a busbar is enough. A quick job with limited costs.
Extension for an EV charger
An EV charger needs its own circuit and often a separate RCD. I extend your unit and connect the charger. One quote for the lot.
Extension for solar panels
The solar panel inverter must be on its own circuit. I add the circuit and connect the inverter to the standards.
Price indication
Your tailored quote always takes precedence.
| Extra circuit | € 44,89 incl. VAT |
|---|---|
| EV charger connection in the consumer unit, from | € 424 incl. VAT |
| EV charger connection in the consumer unit, up to | € 962 incl. VAT |
| Installing three-phase power | € 545 incl. VAT |
| For comparison: complete three-phase meter cupboard replacement | from € 2.699,99 incl. VAT |
Factors that affect the price
- Number of extra circuits: more circuits means more breakers and cabling.
- RCD: sometimes an extra RCD is needed; that affects the price.
- Access: I work faster in an easily accessible cupboard.
- Condition of the unit: if the unit isn't suitable for extension, replacement may be needed.
- Grid operator: when upgrading the connection (for example to three-phase), the grid operator and the lead time play a part.
Questions about extending a meter cupboard
What does a meter cupboard extension cost?
The cost depends on the number of extra circuits, whether a new RCD is needed and the access. An extension with one or two circuits is often cheaper than a complete replacement. Request a tailored quote.
Can my meter cupboard be extended for an EV charger?
In many cases, yes. An EV charger needs its own circuit and often an RCD. I assess your unit and tell you what's needed and what it costs.
Do solar panels need their own circuit?
Yes. The solar panel inverter must be on its own circuit. I add the circuit and connect the inverter to the standards.
When is replacing better than extending?
If your consumer unit is outdated (for example with screw-in or porcelain fuses) or has no room for a safe extension, I often recommend a complete replacement. I explain the options in the quote.
Can I get a quote without you coming round?
Yes. I give a tailored quote after assessing your meter cupboard or based on a photo.
Is a quote for an extension free of obligation?
Yes. You get a transparent quote. I only start the work after you agree. If more turns out to be needed on site, I discuss it with you first.

How many circuits do you need in your consumer unit?
Work it out room by room instead of guessing a number. And add four spare modules: that costs next to nothing now and saves a whole new consumer unit later.
